Simplifying remote development with Xbox PC Remote Tools
Game developers need to test on real hardware. They shouldn't have to sit next to it.

Game developers often need to test builds on real hardware, and they can’t always be sitting in front of it. Xbox PC Remote Tools lets them connect to and control devices remotely from their PC.
The design problem
The tools had to be reliable enough for experienced engineers to use every day, and clear enough for someone brand new to Xbox development. Those two groups want very different amounts of explanation.
I focused on three moments:
- Connecting. The step most likely to fail, with the worst error messages.
- Deploying files. Frequent, repetitive, and easy to get slightly wrong.
- Debugging remotely. Where the interface should get out of the way.
What shipped
Xbox PC Remote Tools went to public preview in March 2026 in four pieces: a setup and pairing app, a Visual Studio extension for deploying and debugging, command-line tools for build pipelines, and APIs for engines.
It works for any PC game on any storefront, with no dependency on the Game Development Kit or the Xbox PC app.
